The colours of an industrial atmosphere.

Inspired by Manchester’s industrial history, this colour, material and finish project translates the colours of air pollution into textile surfaces. Twisting, overlaying and embroidery explore changing colour and the consequences of consumption.

Read the project story

Inspired by the transformative impact of Manchester’s industrialisation in the 19th century, this project highlights its significant contributions to economic growth and global trade and the negative consequences, such as severe pollution and health problems for the town's inhabitants and environment. Air pollution remains a global issue today, harming our health and impacting the environment by reducing visibility, blocking sunlight, causing acid rain and damaging forests, wildlife and agriculture. Greenhouse gas pollution also contributes to climate change, affecting the entire planet. In my CMF (Colour, Material and Finish) project, I examine the colours resulting from air pollution and translate them into materials through twisting, overlaying, and embroidering techniques. This approach demonstrates the changing colours of pollution, emphasizing the varying levels of danger associated with different pollutants. It aims to warn the audience, encouraging them to reconsider and change their consumption behaviours.
