Sericulture

A personal story woven through silk.

Inspired by Becky’s grandparents’ experience raising silkworms during the 1980s, Sericulture honours the labour, skill and cultural heritage of silk production. Mulberry leaves and eco-printing connect traditional knowledge with contemporary textile and fashion design.

Read the project story

Inspired by my grandparents’ eight-year experience in sericulture during the 1980s, my work in fashion and textiles pays homage to the rich history of silk production. Their dedication to raising silkworms, encouraged by the Chinese Authority for income generation, profoundly impacted their lives and held deep personal significance for me.  The secret of silk was kept in Ancient China for over a millennium, carries a reputation as a luxury material. However, few know the intricate skills, labour and time required to nurture silkworms and extract silk from them. As traditional techniques fade away in the face of faster and cheaper technologies, our heritage and knowledge are at risk of being lost.  My intention is to raise awareness of the ingredients for silk cultivation and the diminishing tradition associated with it. By showcasing silkworms' primary food, mulberry leaves, through garments, I aim to honour the past while encouraging reflection and appreciation for our cultural heritage. It is crucial to acknowledge our history to shape a more informed and updated present.  Through my ‘Sericulture’, I invite you to explore the intricate world of silk production and witness the fusion of tradition and contemporary design in my textile and fashion creations.
