Inspired by Virginia Woolf’s Orlando, this costume project explores gender transformation, societal roles and the struggles faced by women and transgender people. Garment forms express restriction and freedom, reflecting on equality and diverse identities.

Read the project story

Virginia Woolf's "Orlando" (Woolf,1928) serves as a profound inspiration for exploring complex themes of gender transformation, societal roles, and the enduring struggles faced by women and transgender individuals. Orlando's journey from a male nobleman to a woman living through centuries without ageing offers a unique lens to examine historical and contemporary perceptions of gender. The societal reactions to Orlando's transformation highlight the persistent challenges in accepting diverse gender identities, an issue that remains relevant today. By delving into the fabric of gender inequality and the social restrictions imposed on vulnerable groups, we can better understand the nuances of gender as both an identity and a societal construct. The exploration of these themes through costume design seeks to create a visceral representation of metamorphosis, restriction, and freedom, emphasising the emotional and physical impacts of gender discrimination. This project aims to raise awareness about the ongoing fight for gender equality and the need for systemic change to ensure freedom and equal opportunities for all.
